Community Reinvestment Act
The Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) was established to ensure that financial institutions actively support the credit needs of all segments of their communities—including individuals with low to moderate incomes, as well as small businesses and farms—while maintaining sound banking practices. The CRA promotes responsible lending that contributes to the economic health and revitalization of the communities banks serve.
The Act also fosters collaboration between banks and community organizations to expand access to credit and financial services in underserved areas. Over the years, CRA has played a key role in motivating banks to open new branches, enhance service offerings, and invest in community development initiatives. It has also led to stronger partnerships with local governments and nonprofits to support lending and investment in economically challenged neighborhoods.
